the fabric of modernism

I spent last weekend in Chichester. First port of call was one of my favourite galleries, the Pallant House to catch the Fabric of Modernism show. It's a collection of John Piper's textiles including printed furnishing fabric, silk scarves, tapestries, carpets & rugs. He used a variety of textures in his paintings including wax resist and dry brush techniques. It's fascinating to see how the craftspeople who carried out the weaving & rugmaking translated these complex textures from the original paintings and collages, with stunning results.  John Piper's abstract fabrics are typical of their time - using the warm palettes of the 1950s & 60s
